HOW SERIOUS ARE YOUR MANAGERS - CEO'S and Board of Directores even at getting the PROBLEM (project) you're said to be manager of - RESOLVED? So... Stupid Question you say? Sure is, but in spite of stupidity - stupidity exists - and even more than you would first be able to imagine... You see - you can ask yourself - and prepare yourself on ALL of the questions you'll find below (and more)... HOWEVER: They will do you NO good - UNLESS you also asked yourself.... ...AND.. NOT LEAST: Your management how SERIOUS they are about THIS Venture you're now in charge of... or is about to be in charge of... B.S. you say? Well, think again: Who are the ones who hired you? Company Management - Right? So... If they had attorney and power to hire you - they sure can kick you outta' there too... The Jewish have a saying that I find Extremely Handy to know, and keep in the back of your head at EVERY time... They say - 'The FISH will ALWAYS ROT from the head first...' (...and so it does...) And TYPICALLY SO: In EVERY of my projects - the main problem has - without exception - been management... And... Sadly enough - some managers are NOT the grown up's they pretend to be when you get into their territory - And SADLY - to many managers have way bigger an EGO than their POSITION within ANY organization should allow for... Simply put: As manager... This kind of BEHAVIOR is a courtesy - a luxury you cannot afford... or even yet... however much you could AFFORD it - You're NOT entitled to it... AND BEWARE: As ProjectManager - You're Management... Right? So, that may assume that before you know it... your head could be rotting too.... Without you even knowing... So, I suggest you - that from time to time - you ask your crew - what they REALLY think about your performance... Sure! When you're honest with yourself - you WILL KNOW when your crew - believes... You're THE MOST #¤%/ up #'¤&'%/ S.O.B in the world... Then... Your job is to ASK them... 'What's UP?' You may EVEN have to help them going - by calling yourself 'ugly' things - admittion that you too - have the possibility of being a TOTAL stuck up moron from time to time... So - make sure you ask: Then... more often than not - people being to scared to speak their mind (which is another DAMNED IMPORTANT question you NEED to ask yourself - and keep in mind at every-time) ...you may need to help your crew off a little... I've done that several times - and withouth exception - I was the one having to start it all... ..Giving me the hard side - the foul language and the whole pack... ALL THINGS - I KNOW IS GOING ON INSIDE THE MINDS AND EMOTIONS OF MY CREW AND COLLEGUES... BUT - it never STOPS there... Oh no! Not by far... This is only airing out the bad smell of the pipings... Clearing your hard-disk and dust out the garbage... Now, you need to ASK - OKAY - Allright! So, exactly now - I'm the BIGGEST #¤&'/&/((%'¤¤#! monkey walking this planet... BUT - unless you tell me WHAT WOULD YOU'VE DONE now if in my situation - you're even more so a #¤&'% then me... Well, sure - you may chose your wordings somewhat differently - but - mostly - people will NOT tell you in your face - directly - honestly - what's up... UNLESS... YOU MAKE IT EASY ON THEM TO GET STARTED! Because they know... Just as you do..... That you're management... too... And... They also know that way to much management stink from their heads - having to big EGO's to handle truth from some insignificant 'numb-nut' sweeping the floors... But I sayeth upon thee... You're the numb-nut here - unless you listen - and listen CAREFULLY to the words of the 'little man' no matter how insignificant... AND, when done listening... Especially if not immediately clear - resonant or hit you in the gut... You ask... Okey! And how is that....? Why is that....? And HOW WOULD YOU DEAL WITH THIS...?! And you'll be AMAZED - even though you happen to know a lot - on a lot of different topics... And even though you may have 100 years university - degrees - diplomas - PhD's - Bachelor degrees... and what have you? When you dare ask these questions... When you dare challenge yourself - and even 'belittle' yourself this way...
YOU WILL BE AMAZED - TRULY How much even a numb-nut may boil over with... AND not least.... YOU'LL DISCOVER HOW MUCH YOU WILL PROSPER - PROFIT AND EXCEL - BECAUSE OF THIS COURAGE TO LISTEN - CHALLENGE - AND SHUT UP - TO LISTEN EVEN MORE... Sure! ALL of these questions are IMPORTANT... ABSOLUTELY.... 1. How will know when you're done with the task? (What are the contracts... etc...) 2. What activities and tasks are - and which are not included? (Limits) 3. What are Your assumptions and thoughts about the project team? 4. What assumptions are you making about the actions of all others involved? 5. How do you estimate the total effort needed - and make it right? 6. How to work out the total schedule (project plan) - To work this thing out? 7. How to successfully work out the correct allocation of effort and time between tasks? 8. What would happen to cost and bottomline by speeding up schedule by 25%? 9. What are the biggest risks that could cause schedule to break or make costs exceed budget? 10. How will you know you're making progress, and how to measure it? 11. What to do in order to make sure things will get done CORRECTLY the FIRST time, in order to save time and ten fold hassle later... AND... - What would happen to you and the project/task - if you should lose 50% - or more of your key resource's? (..and believe me - this can easily happen to you! Several times, when taking over so havoced projects you'd be embarrassed to call them yours - I've had to operate - months and months - with half my crew and more on sick leave... and what have you...) - Furthermore... How sure are you the resources you now have - will be yours to keep - 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months down the road? (Yup! I can't count all the times I've had to fight - 'cats and dogs' - over people - as well as resources - originally and truthfully dedicated and allocated to me...) Important Stuff INDEED! HOWEVER... ..Simply a waste - and you're doomed - unless you take into account what I just took you through... Because - you see - a lot of TROUBLE would vanish as out of thin air if only more project managers (and managers... and CEO's... and... and...) would SIMPLY STOP playing John Wayne - Clint Eastwood/Dirty Harry... ...running the hallways like madmen ....shooting from their hips... ..being (rather feeling like they're the most important) hot-shots... (in the world...) ..Knowing NOT what they're actually doing... (..And! Even trying to knock you down, when they start realizing: 'Ouch! Woaahh! What now.. This guy's actually in danger of serving us the results he told he would...' )
Anyways: BUT - for the rest of us... and even you... ..We don't have that skill trimmed down... So, let someone with that quality take care of YOUR shooting, and you simply just make SURE you get OUT of their way - letting them (your crew - preferrably) - PERFORM their work of ART... When they're the ones in the 'know'! THEN - when it's your turn to be B.O.S.S. - when finally - after all - you know BETTER - you stand up - and then... BUT ONLY THEN... you're in command... Otherwise:... Wisen up - ask yourself:
Is there REALLY anybody ELSE - in my Crew Again: You'd be surprised... Furthermore... More important than ASKING these questions... Is the way you handle the ANSWERS to these questions... HOw you're actually dealing with what REALLY happens - and NOT simply some LAME theories - that never even existed - and never even will... NO! Don't get me wrong - but - please do... if it makes you feel more comfortable... Theory is IMPORTANT as hell - BUT - without REALISTIC tracks BACK to REALITY - and ABILITY to ADJUST your theory to what is ACTUALLY going on... ..You're simply stuck as pig in mud - until you Stop and ASK yourself - what's up... ..And truly listen... Looks... Digests.... Feels... Smell.. and what have you... Then... Conclude... When you know what you're up against... Until then - you're nothing but a servant 'door-sweeper'... Nothing but a simple servant fool - on your quest for truth and truthful answers... Beacuse the quality of the questions you ask - and the quality of your ABILITY and GUTS - BALLS even (and believe me - it happens I see women with more balls than us sorry assed men...,-) to handle and ask these questions...) ..WILL determine the quality of the ANSWERS you'll get thrown back at you... And NEXT: That - will determine the quality of your ACTIONS - THUS the QUALITY OF YOUR THEORIES... And... Even MORE so IMPORTANT - when the ANSWERS you GET - are of a nature you don't like - or maybe even - outright disgusts you.... ..What questions do you cry out then....
