Focusing your time to be as productive as you can has never been more important - yet many of us waste our precious time on employees, who frankly don't deserve it. They will never fit. Solving this problem for you will almost certainly be solving a problem for them - so don't be fearful. Want to know more - and how? Read on...

Ever feel that you spend too much time shoring up the performance of some of your people? More time with one or two than with some of the others.

And doesn't that just drain you? So think about those employees and how they are draining you and damaging the energy you have. The energy that could well be directed much more productively.

There are people in your business who just seem to be way off where you want them to be. They are behaving as they are and it's perfectly their right to be the way they are. But not in your business.

If it doesn't fit what you want, then you have two options (apart from just tolerating it, which I'm sure you don't want to do):-

  1. Make very clear what your expectations are in words of one syllable and write them down. Manage it closely and be prepared for 2.
  2. Work out a way to take them from your business (remember - you are doing them a favour, because if they are in an job which is way different than they are, they will be very unhappy underneath).
  3. There's a 3. Recruit a lot more carefully in future.

  • What do you observe in your team today?
  • Who are the 'keepers'
  • Who are the 'losers' (the ones who suck you dry of energy)
  • Who are the 'Oooops, I should never have taken them on in the first place'.
Great learning too!

And just think about what you will do with the time! One of my clients, when asked to note the people who wasted his time in one week found that one person alone accounted for 30% of his time!

Solving that issue, which required a little focused attention, within two weeks had created that space for him. Space that he used to build his business way above target.

1. How to Help Your Company Become a World Class Company By Michael Angier
Most people think real change in an organization occurs as a result of top-level leadership. This isn't always the case.Oftentimes, it's someone within the rank and file who stands up and challenges the status quo. Remember the old adage, "If the people will lead, the leaders will follow."Years ago I was the säles manager for company with about 30 employees. The business was struggling, and a management consultant had been called in to try and get things back on track. In one of my meetings wit…

2. Knowledge Management - Creating a Sustainable Yellow Pages System By Chris Collison
How can I "know who knows" None of us can personally know more than around 250 people, yet we want our companies to be smart, learning organisations where it's easy to find the right person to talk to. This is why many organisations create "yellow pages" applications, which enable employees to find and contact other staff with particular expertise and skills. However, these systems can be fraught with difficulty in their implementation, and often end up as out-of-date, glorified intranet te…

3. One Thing You Can't Hide By Gordon Goh
One of the most important of all motivators at work is consideration. Employees report that the best managers they ever had were people who cared about them as people and as friends. These managers took the time to ask them questions about their lives, and to listen patiently while they talked about the dilemmas and problems and situations in their families. The more that the employees felt that the boss liked them and respected them, the more empowered and motivated they felt.Caring Is The Ke…

4. Ringing Doorbells Without Howitzers By Brent Filson
Many operations leaders have been there, done that with re-engineering. And they report, in effect, that the process is like ringing a doorbell with a howitzer shell.Reducing costs through wholesale layoffs ostensibly tied to ultimate results provides quick hits on balance sheets, but its clumsy blows can raise hell with operations.Operational results can be achieved consistently with precision and power not when people are taken out of the organization but instead put back in."Putting people…
