Late last year I was presenting a workshop for the senior managers of a major organisation. Whilst doing a pre-workshop survey to assess the challenges these managers were experiencing it became very apparent to me that many of them were showing the signs of business burn-out. And it was no wonder why. They were suffering from 'Priority Problems'. Quite simply they were making the mistake of doing the urgent rather than the important tasks. They were working extremely long hours, with no time for themselves or the people in their lives. Their offices and departments were cluttered as was their communication as a consequence. This meant that they had difficulty communicating effectively with team members and, worse still with their families. Naturally this had a huge impact on the morale and productivity of their teams and the bottom line. What it did on the home front was even worse! And yet overcoming Priority Problems is pretty easy. All you have to do is look at what successful managers do and model their behaviour. You'll also find that they are very effective with their time management skills. Five Secrets of Highly Successful Managers: Highly successful managers are great role models
Highly successful managers invest time and money in their team and themselves
Highly successful managers are organised
Highly successful managers are fit and healthy
Highly successful managers have a life
The result of putting these secrets into action is pretty simple. Highly successful mangers get their priorities about people, work and home right! They hone their time management skills and apply them to all areas of their life. By Doug Staneart One of the most common complaints we hear from interviewing employees in the construction industry is, “I never get useful feedback about how I am doing my job.”Most companies today use a performance appraisal system or a performance review system that was invented decades ago in a much slower business economy. So data that is given to employees in annual, semi-annual, or even quarterly reviews tends to be outdated by the time it is received by the person who could benefit most from the infor… 2. 7 Tips for Growing Your Business You Do Not Want to Ignore: Growing companies must always be ready for the next challenge. If you fail in meeting critical business challenges you will not grow. Challenges often require some type of breakthrough. But do not be misled. By Marcia Zidle If you’re not satfied with the results of your management training programs, maybe it’s because you handle training as a ‘one shot’ event rather than a process of developing your people to be better managers. One of the common misconceptions is that a manager can take a course and voila he is now skilled in communicating with others, or managing his time or delegating work. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither will people change in one day. Particularly many leadership competencies require se… 4. Is Your Employee Newsletter Management Propaganda? By Robert Abbott It should not be. If it is an effective newsletter, it will serve the needs of readers (employees) as much as it serves the needs of the publisher (management).Let me explain how to ensure it serves employees as well as management, by reviewing four key points I make in A Manager’s Guide to Newsletters: Communicating for Results. Objectives and reader responses:First, state your objectives in terms of reader responses.
