Focusing your time to be as productive as you can has never been more important - yet many of us waste our precious time on employees, who frankly don't deserve it. They will never fit. Solving this problem for you will almost certainly be solving a problem for them - so don't be fearful. Want to know more - and how? Read on...

Ever feel that you spend too much time shoring up the performance of some of your people? More time with one or two than with some of the others.

And doesn't that just drain you? So think about those employees and how they are draining you and damaging the energy you have. The energy that could well be directed much more productively.

There are people in your business who just seem to be way off where you want them to be. They are behaving as they are and it's perfectly their right to be the way they are. But not in your business.

If it doesn't fit what you want, then you have two options (apart from just tolerating it, which I'm sure you don't want to do):-

  1. Make very clear what your expectations are in words of one syllable and write them down. Manage it closely and be prepared for 2.
  2. Work out a way to take them from your business (remember - you are doing them a favour, because if they are in an job which is way different than they are, they will be very unhappy underneath).
  3. There's a 3. Recruit a lot more carefully in future.

  • What do you observe in your team today?
  • Who are the 'keepers'
  • Who are the 'losers' (the ones who suck you dry of energy)
  • Who are the 'Oooops, I should never have taken them on in the first place'.
Great learning too!

And just think about what you will do with the time! One of my clients, when asked to note the people who wasted his time in one week found that one person alone accounted for 30% of his time!

Solving that issue, which required a little focused attention, within two weeks had created that space for him. Space that he used to build his business way above target.

1. Problem-Solving Success Tip: Look For Sponsors And Solution Owners By Jeanne Sawyer
Look for sponsors and solution owners rather than problem owners.Everyone participating in the situation owns the problem, like it or not—and nobody likes it. However, if one person is designated as the problem owner, that gives everyone else involved implicit permission to step away and essentially pretend that they don’t have an ownership role in the problem. In other words, appointing a problem owner gets in the way of solving a problem.A much better term for what is usually expected of the…

2. Relationships On the Job By Todd Linaman
Finding the right position is only one piece of the puzzle that leads to job satisfaction. Have you ever heard someone say, "I’d like my work if it weren’t for the people I work with"? One of the greatest challenges in the workplace is getting along with other people. It hardly matters if someone is the best and brightest at what he does if he creates dissension in the office. Regardless of whether we’re hired to lead or be led, it is the ability to establish functional and healthy workplace r…

3. Business Basics - Priority Versus Sequence By Andrew Gowans
We all know (well I hope we do) that part of being a good leader is in the art of delegation, trust, and looking after the people who look after us (good topic for another article!!!) BUT who looks after us, how do we look after ourselves? How do we make our job(s) any easier? Based on the premise that it helps to be reminded occasionally of business basics or best practices, I thought it would be worthwhile to share this snippet with you... Priority Vs Sequence Two of the worst inventions are…

4. You Can't Not Communicate By Kevin Eikenberry
Most of us would like to be better communicators. As leaders, co-workers, team members and in all of the other roles we play both professionally and personally, we know that communication is a major key to success. When we are frustrated or stymied by something, often better communication would have improved it.Consider the new executive or manager who walks into their first meeting. Every movement is watched. Where they sit is analyzed. What they say is discussed later. Did they make decl…
