It happens. Colleagues compete for rewards, attention, or kudos. Sometimes it's OK, other times it's not. Watch for these nuggets and see which side of the ledger your team is on:

When competition is good -

* Raises the level of play across an entire team * Can build teamwork when team members help each other be successful

* Can be effective when rewards are given out fairly

When competition isn't so good -

* Can be divisive when a manager uses competition as a means of humiliating other team members

* Can be unhealthy when rewards for outstanding performance are too scarce - there are too few rewards for too many people

* Can be counter-productive when team members view competition as win-lose

Best practices for both encouraging and discouraging competition -

* Create a 'Help others be successful' reward, where team members are rewarded based on innovative ways they have helped a teamate be more successful on a project or task.

* Post team results on a visibility board or website for the entire team to see. Just make sure there is a level playing field and that each team member has an equal opportunity to compete.

* Do not reward competition by taking something away from someone else. Make the reward additive, not subtractive.

* Do not reward (better yet admonish) win-lose competition where someone wins at another's expense.

* Provide opportunity for the entire team to share in a reward if everyone meets a specific goal

* Never compare one employee or team to another, it's similar to a parent saying 'Why can't you be like your brother Jeffy?'

During the development of the “Assertiveness Coffee Cards” we, at Cutesolutions, have thoroughly reviewed the literature on neuro-psychology to find out what recent discoveries say on assertiveness. Major strides have been made in unravelling the processes guiding our behaviour, in identifying the causes for a great number of cognitive disabilities and deepening understanding of the human traits. But, the brain is still far from giving away its secrets, though a lot has already been achieved …

2. Understanding Every Aspect of Your Organization By Andrew E. Schwartz
GET TO KNOW YOUR ORGANIZATION: If you don’t understand an aspect of the organization or a procedure within it, ask. If you still don’t understand, ask again. Question until you are sure you understand the topic. It’s easy to feel your questions aren’t sophisticated enough, especially when you work with people who have been doing what they do for years. Start with basic questions like “What does our organization do?” “How does our organization do it?” “Who needs our product?” “Who does what wit…

3. How to Dodge Distribution Difficulties By Cheryl Lockhart
It happened again. I ran into an old friend while registering for the World Masters Games last month and as we were catching up, she complemented me on a necklace I was wearing. When I told her I bought it in South Africa on my last trip there, she exclaimed, "You have to start importing these. You'd make a fortune!"The Great Import PlanThis is a refrain I've heard over and over again and while there is some truth in it, you can make money being an importer, there is a certain amount of naivet…

4. 8 Ways to Get More from your Existing Customers
For many of us - especially those in service businesses - our existing and previous customers are vital for three reasons: 1. They have already bought from us, so providing they had a good experience, they might buy from us again. We also know that getting a new customer is much more expensive than selling to an existing customer, so by continuing to sell to them, we are really saving ourselves some money. 2. They can give us invaluable feedback on how we did. Was our service good enough? Did we…
